Stanislav Grof The Roots of Human Violence and Greed: Observations from Psychedelic Research. (English, simultaneous translation Eng/Ger) Since time immemorial, violence and greed have been among the most important forces driving human history. Due to technological progress and exponential population growth in the twentieth century, they have become a threat for survival of life on our planet. It has become imperative to gain a deeper understanding of the roots of these forces in the human psyche and to find ways of reducing their impact in the world. In this lecture, we will explore the observations from psychedelic research that offer new insights into extreme forms of human violence and social pathology, such as wars, bloody revolutions, terrorism, suicide bombing, concentration camps, and genocide. In a series of slides, we will demonstrate the astonishing similarities between the symbolism of posters and cartoons from the time of wars and the visions accompanying the reliving of birth and the experience of psychospiritual death and rebirth. |

| Jan Christoph Bublitz Psychotropics Beyond Therapy: The Enhancement of Humans and its Neuroethical Challenges in a (Brave) New World (German, without translation) With the advent of pharmaceutical neuroenhancements as Ritalin, Modafinil, Prozac and other "lifestyle" drugs, the non-therapeutical (ab-)use of psychotropics is reconsidered by ethic commissions, politicians and philosophers worldwide. In the near future, substance use might be common in everyday life in order to increase alertness and working efficiency or just to feel "better than well". Enthusiastically embraced as a step towards transhumanism by some, others fear the loss of authenticity, growing inequalities or political quietism in a world of mind-doping and synthetic happiness. Mapping the field in the current debate, some of the crucial ethical issues are explored in the hope to bridge the gap between theoretical discourse and the experiences of the psychedelic community, which have not (yet) been paid the attention they may deserve. |

| Carolyn Garcia On the Bus in America: Acid Tests, The Merry Pranksters, and the Grateful Dead (English, simultaneous translation Eng/Ger) In 1965, a group of young writers and artists began a series of parties and happenings to explore the new regions of mind accessed with LSD. Named The Merry Pranksters, they created a new type of gathering where boundaries between audience and performers disappeared and all participated in a new consciousness. | Panel Discussion The Birth of the Psychedelic Movement: A Look Back at Another America With Carolyn Garcia, Ralph Metzner, Cynthia Palmer, Michael Horowitz, Moderation: Dale Pendell (English, simultaneous translation Eng/Ger) The term "psychedelic" was coined in 1956 by psychiatrist Humphry Osmond, in a now-famous exchange with writer Aldous Huxley, who both recognized the potential of these "new" kind of psychoactive substances for self-awareness and to expand consciousness, in an age of nuclqar proliferation and Cold War confrontations. But it was American exponents, like Harvard scholars Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert and Ralph Metzner, Beat poet Allen Ginsberg, novelist Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters, with their legendary Acid Tests, acid rock bands like The Grateful Dead, and underground LSD chemists exemplified by Owsley who, with other countercultural activists and artists, enabled a Psychedelic Revolution in the U.S. The youth movement, culminating at the "Summer of Love" in 1967, and perhaps best expressed by the slogans All You Need is Love and Make Love Not War, quickly spread to Western Europe and all over the world. Contemporary witnesses recount the origins, expectations and experiences to describe this time of cultural, political, and social changes. |

| Dennis McKenna Psychedelics in Basic Neuroscience and Clinical Practice (English, simultaneous translation Eng/Ger) The potential of psychedelics as research tools in basic neuroscience and in therapeutic applications in clinical practice is being investigated more vigorously than at anytime in the last 35 years. As a result of these recent studies, psychedelics are regaining recognition as research tools in neuroscience, for example in brain-imaging, and as molecular probes in elucidating the neurochemical substrates of consciousness, perception, and transpersonal experiences. On the clinical side, psychedelics are being investigated for their potential therapeutic utility in the alleviation of anxiety and depression in the terminally ill, in the treatment of PTSD, and in the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, among others. | Dennis McKenna Bitter Brews and Other Abominations: The Uses and Abuses of some little known psychoactive Agents. (English, simultaneous translation Eng/Ger) Most of us are familiar with the well-known hallucinogenic plants that form the basis of shamanic practices throughout the world. Psychedelics such as peyote cactus, psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, and DMT-containing snuffs all have long traditions of indigenous use. But many people may not realize that the natural world is permeated with psychotropic chemistry. There exists a plethora of more obscure psychoactive plants, fungi and animals that are used and valued by indigenous peoples for their psychotropic effects, and their utility in shamanic healing practices. This seminar will provide a quick overview of some of these little known psychotropic substances, and will discuss their uses in the context of ethnomedicine, as well as their botany, chemistry, and pharmacology, to the extent that they are known. The potential medical and research applications of these obscure and overlooked materials will also be discussed. |

| Amanda Feilding / The Beckley Foundation Expanded Consciousness and its Importance to Survival (English, without translation) The Beckley Foundation is dedicated to the interdisciplinary investigation of consciousness and its altered states, and how the knowledge produced by this research can be used to benefit the wellbeing and creative potential of our species. Beckley’s current projects include: first fully approved research with LSD and human subjects; investigating the neural and physiological correlates underlying the benefits of cannabis; research into the neural correlates of Higher States of Consciousness and bio-feedback devices to enable novice meditators to achieve these higher states; investigation into changes in cerebral fluid dynamics in the aging process, and how such detrimental changes might be counteracted; investigation into LSD as a palliative treatment for the dying, enhancer of the mystical experience plus the possible beneficial use of micro-doses of LSD to improve cerebral circulation. In a scientific age, we require scientific explanations to bring about a change in the zeitgeist. |
